Sharpening is the prerequisite skill — every other technique gets faster, cleaner, and safer once your edges are sharp. A dull chisel doesn't just cut poorly; it crushes wood fibers, blows out the back of a mortise, and forces you to push hard enough that the tool slips. Most beginners avoid sharpening because the gear seems intimidating, and most intermediate woodworkers stop progressing because their edges are merely "OK."

The system that produces the sharpest edges most consistently is a coarse-medium-fine progression on stones (waterstones, oil stones, or diamond plates — they all work) finished on a leather strop with green compound. The honing-guide debate is real but small: jigs make beginners faster, freehand is faster once you've practiced, and either produces a working edge. What matters is keeping the bevel angle consistent across the progression and stropping the back to remove the burr at the very end.
