Finishing

The last 5% of the project that decides 50% of how it looks. Surface prep, application, troubleshooting, and product choice across every finish family.

46 guides · 9 subtopics

Finishing is the last 5% of a project that gets remembered for the first 10 years. A perfect dovetail and a flawless table top get judged by how the finish looks at six feet — the color, the depth, the sheen, the absence of brush marks or dust nibs. Most woodworkers learn finishing by repetition: try the wrong product on the wrong wood, get a bad result, switch to the next thing. The faster path is matching the finish to the wood, the use, and the look you're after.

Three decisions cover most cases. First, oil vs film: penetrating oils (Danish, tung, linseed) build no surface and read as natural; film finishes (poly, lacquer, shellac) sit on top and protect against water, alcohol, and chemicals. Second, water-based vs solvent-based: water-based dries faster and emits less, solvent-based often gives richer color and self-levels better. Third, sheen: satin reads more natural, gloss reads more refined; matte reads modern. Pick all three, test on a scrap of the actual project wood, then commit.

The guides below cover dye vs stain, the polyurethane/lacquer/shellac/oil decision, prep sanding through grit progression, brush vs spray vs wipe-on, and the troubleshooting recipes for runs, fish-eye, and the bubbles every beginner produces on the first attempt.
